If you are registered and hold a current practising certificate in Australia with Ahpra, you can apply for registration under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (TTMRA).
To apply for registration you must:
- Scan and provide the required documents listed below. These may be emailed directly to the OTBNZ at firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Make the appropriate payment. (The fee for this application is $NZD 280 (inc GST))
Required documentation for registration
You must provide two forms of identity documentation and evidence of any changes to your name. One of these must have a photograph. Acceptable forms of identification are:
• Birth Certificate
• Current Passport (current)
• Driver’s Licence (current)
• Aotearoa New Zealand Citizenship Certificate
• Aotearoa New Zealand Certificate of Identity
• Deed Poll Change and/or Marriage Licence
Criminal history checks
You are required to declare any criminal convictions you may have. If you have visited or lived in Aotearoa New Zealand you will need to download and complete the criminal convictions form for uploading during your application.
You must also apply and pay for a criminal conviction check for Australia, and any other country you have lived in for more than 6 months in the last 10 years. The cost for this can be estimated here. Further information about Criminal Conviction reports is available here.

You must declare any physical or mental health condition/s that may impact on your ability to practice as an occupational therapist. We may ask for more information to enable us to understand how this may impact your application. More information about this is available here.
Current and previous registration
You must supply proof of your current registration with Ahpra and consent to the OTBNZ confirming your registration status.
If you are or have been registered with any other regulatory or disciplinary body then please supply a Certificate of Good Standing from the relevant body.
You will also need to supply information about any disciplinary action that may have been taken while you were registered.
You must be registered and hold a practising certificate in order to work as an occupational therapist in Aotearoa New Zealand. You may apply for a practising certificate when completing your online registration application. The fee for practising certificates is NZD$500 for up to 12 months, or NZD$190 for up to 3 months (inc GST).
Once you have lodged your complete application for registration and a practising certificate, including payments and all requested documentation, you are deemed registered and may begin practising. The OTBNZ will advise of the outcome of your application within one month.
